The Lake District

The "Classics" Series

Helvellyn and Striding Edge from High Spying How.

At over 3000' Helvellyn is one of the most popular fells in the whole of the Lake District. It has two distinct aspects, the easier western slopes or the much more inspiring eastern face. Of all the routes that lead to the summit the one via Striding Edge is the "classic" an airy ridge which is achievable with some care by most experienced fell walkers.

It is this view that I wanted to try and capture. Throughout the year it can be rather busy with walkers but I considered the scene would be made more dramatic if the ridge was in winter conditions. So it was that early one March morning when the weather forecast looked favourable I set off to obtain my references. I had done some research and realised that early morning would be the optimum time as hopefully the low sun would highlight the craggy face above Red Tarn and give good shadows on the edge itself. To view my complete route in photographs click here.

I was nearly frustrated in my goal due to the swirling cloud on the summit but patience is a virtue and I was lucky.

After a what seemed like an age the cloud lifted off the summit  and the sun returned.

However I had to wait until the sun shone on this end of the ridge by that time the summit was covered again.

The advantage of being an artist is the fact that I can combine the two photographs to give the ideal lighting on the scene.

Here are the initial sketches for the final composition.

I am continuing to work on this painting idea and progress will be added to this page on a regular basis.

Notes on the "Classics" series. All paintings will be produced in watercolour and will measure approximately 405mm high by 508mm wide for the landscape versions and 508mm high by 390mm for the portrait styled scenes.  It is my intention to produce a high quality (giclee) print from each image in this set but only to an edition of 75 and to the exact size of the original. The images will not be available in any other format. If you are interested in any of these images then please do contact me via the link on the home page.
