The Lake District

The "Classics" Series

Langdale Pikes from Lingmoor Fell.

Most of the paintings in this series depict the profile of just one fell but the Langdale Pikes are different. This grouping of summits form possibly one of the most recognised mountain outlines in the whole of the Lake District. Dominated by the peak of Harrison Stickle the Langdale Pikes offer great walking and climbing in the very centre of the region.

Our route over Lingmoor Fell gave us fine views over the Langdale valley and up to the valley end where the Crinkle Crags and Bowfell formed the skyline. However the early afternoon light on the southern flank of "The Pikes" served to add extra relief to the crags and gullies of the mountain. The rich colour of the dead bracken added to enhance the slopes above the green fields of the valley floor. The white buildings of the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel gives the scene a sense of scale.

Being in shadow means that the summits of the fells have added drama. I have included some foreground vegetation to extend the scale.

Here are the initial sketches for the final composition.

I am continuing to work on this painting idea and progress will be added to this page on a regular basis.

Notes on the "Classics" series. All paintings will be produced in watercolour and will measure approximately 405mm high by 508mm wide. It is my intention to produce a high quality (giclee) print from each image in this set but only to an edition of 75 and to the exact size of the original. The images will not be available in any other format. If you are interested in any of these images then please do contact me via the link at the top of this page.
