The Lake District The "Classics" Series Bowfell from Shelter Crags. At the western end of Great Langdale the skyline is dominated by the ridge of Crinkle Crags and the pointed summit of Bow fell. This high fell, only 40' short of 3000' is easily attainable by reasonably fit walkers by an ascent via a prominent eastern spur known as The Band, the well worn path on this route reflects its popularity. There are many aspects of Bowfell that I would like to capture in painting including the view across the the Scafell Range, The Great Slab and Flat Crags and Bowfell Buttress. However the idea of this series is to capture the fells in classic profiles which will enable the viewer to instantly identify these dramatic mountains. For this painting I have opted to paint Bowfell from the south near Shelter Crags. To see the route and photographs from my day click here.
The photograph above is only one of many that I took whist I tried not only to get the best possible composition details but also taking advantage of the time of day when the sun highlighted the Links. Here are the initial sketches for the final composition.
I am continuing to work on this painting idea and progress will be added to this page on a regular basis. Notes on the "Classics" series. All paintings will be produced in watercolour and will measure approximately 405mm high by 508mm wide. It is my intention to produce a high quality (giclee) print from each image in this set but only to an edition of 75 and to the exact size of the original. The images will not be available in any other format. If you are interested in any of these images then please do contact me via the link at the top of this page. All images copyright © Andy Beck
