The "Classics" Series

The Old Man of Coniston from Blind Tarn Quarry..

The Coniston Fells offer some great walking and once height has be achieved several fells can be visited in return for relatively little effort. Being the dominant mountain when the range is viewed from Coniston, the "Old Man" is the fell which is the aim of even the average walker. The geology of this landscape has meant that in the past the land has been scarred by industry in the form of mining, mostly for copper. To a much lesser scale mining operations are still in progress.

It was an easy decision to include The Old Man in this series of paintings, what made it more difficult was deciding from which aspect to convey the hill. Unlike some of the other fells the Old Man has no dramatic crags or knife-edge ridges so it was more by luck than judgement that I came up with this view which I feel captures the character of this hulk of a hill. It may not be the normal view of the fell but due to the early morning light on the snow and the fact that the industrial heritage is included both in the foreground and the distant quarry on the fell side behind I think this view sums up The Old Man of Coniston.

Here are the initial sketches for the final composition.

I am continuing to work on this painting idea and progress will be added to this page on a regular basis.

Notes on the "Classics" series. All paintings will be produced in watercolour and will measure approximately 405mm high by 508mm wide. It is my intention to produce a high quality (giclee) print from each image in this set but only to an edition of 75 and to the exact size of the original. The images will not be available in any other format. If you are interested in any of these images then please do contact me via the link at the top of this page.
