Lane heading out of
Rosthwaite.

A touch of "Lambing
Live". Herdwick/Texel cross lambs get a helping hand out into the warm
Spring sunshine.

Crossing the very low
beck.

Grange Fell from the path
up to Johnny's Wood.

And Great Crag from
slightly higher.

Castle Crag and Kings
How from the slopes of High Doat.

Great End and Borrowdale
from High Doat.

Glaramara. High Doat is a super location
for hill spotting with plenty of soft grass for a picnic or a snooze.

Grey Knotts and the Honister Pass road.

Castle Crag from my crossing route up to
Rigghead Quarries.

Butterwort and Common Sundew. Not rare
plants but interesting to see them in close proximity especially as they
are both insect eaters, you can even see the trapped flies on the sticky
green leaves of the Butterwort.

Across to Ullscarf.

Investigating Rigghead quarries, there
are many level entrances here and all needed checking out so that I got
the correct one for the drawing (this isnt it)

Old ruins at Rigghead. Hindscarth through
the gap.

Rigg Head and down to Newlands.

Launchy Tarn and a distant Helvellyn range.

High Spy over Launchy Tarn.

Bypassing High Scawdel we took the round
route towards Dale Head.

Quarries near Yew Crag where I ticked off
another level entrance as a reference.

Buttermere from the quarries.

Now back on the route to Dale Head with
super views back to Bowfell round to Great Gable.

Dale Head summit with its fine cairn.

Descending towards Dale Head tarn there
are fine views down into Newlands valley.

Dale Head tarn.

From the tarn its a simple path up to
High Spy.

The route to High Spy with the big hills
behind us.

The team on High Spy summit.

It was turning out to be a very pleasant
late afternoon. the hard work was now done so it was simple ridge walk
north.

Eel Crags on High Spy.

The view back to High Spy summit.

Once on Blea Crag there is a fine view
over Maiden Moor to Skiddaw

Maiden Moor summit, often bypassed by
walkers and not even at the site which AW rated as the summit.

Evening light on Catbells

Zeta takes in the evening sun.

Bailey on look-out.

This was my route of ascent, down to
Grange from Narrow Moor. No path here just a steep grassy slope as I
headed towards Ellers.

Eagle Crag and Sergeant Man in the last
light of the day.

Having found my last two references of
the day all that was left was to walk the route from Grange back to
Rosthwaite. Usually this is a popular route but this evening I saw no
other walkers, in fact since leaving Rosthwaite I had met just one walker
just as I started the walk. The advantages of a late start.
