10th September 2009 Starling Dodd.

For quite a while it had been my plan to complete my round of the 214 Wainwright Fells on Starling Dodd and to do so on this day. The 10th September 1965 was the day that Alf Wainwright completed his round on this very fell so I was hoping to be there 44 years to the day. All I wished for was some good weather and some good company.

A fine day as we put on our boots at Buttermere.

The Wainwright memorial in the church.

High Stile in the early morning sun.

Crossing Scale Bridge.

Grasmoor over Crummock Water.

Scale Force.

Looking back to Robinson.

Esther and Jenny near Floutern Pass. At this point I had to drop back down to the bottom of Red Gill for a reference. The ladies took a diagonal ascending route under Floutern Crag.

Floutern Tarn.

Red Gill, form here I headed up the left of the ravine, met up with the others and then up to the summit of Great Borne.

Zeta investigates as we approach Starling Dodd top.

This is it , Starling Dodd, the last of the 214 for both me and Zeta.

The second cairn on the summit made up of the old tangled ironwork of the fence.

After a celebratory drink we then headed up to Red Pike.

Mellbreak and Crummock Water from the crags of Red Pike.

Zeta and Jenny.

Todays team. (Zeta goes a bit shy)

The steep descent off Red Pike.

At the saddle before Dodd. As the ladies headed down towards Bleaberry Tarn I had one reference to get by dropping down here towards the dip before returning back up.

The well made pitched path down to the tarn.

Red Pike from the tarn outlet.

There were not many summer days as good as this. Chapel Crags of High Stile form the backdrop.

Descending the Sour Milk Gill path.

Cloud shadows on Fleetwith Pike.

An old stand of pine trees.

Grasmoor and the green field of Buttermere.

High Snockrigg reflected in Buttermere.

Fleetwith Pike.

And to finish a grand day, a pint at the Bridge Hotel. From here we headed to Keswick to complete the day with fish and chips in real AW style.

Even on the way to Keswick there was chance to tick off a couple of other references including this one. PM or email me if you think you know where it is?
