The road between Teesdale and Arkengarthdale passes up over The Stang where the forestry is partly being cleared. The are good views over Teesdale and away to the right is the industrial area of Middlesborough.
In one place there is a large patch of Early Purple Orchids right by the roadside.
They are in full bloom at the moment.
The Powder House, Arkengarthdale with Scar House behind. The Powder House was used to store explosives during the industrial mining period.
Above Langthwaite, Arkengarthdale.
Arkengarthdale and Fremington Edge.
Classic Swaledale meadows with field barns.
Dog walker by the River Swale.
Swaledale barn near Thwaite.
Wainwath Force near Keld
Looking towards Keld, Upper Swaledale.
Swaledale from above Thwaite.
Parking in Muker we passed the village institute to start the short walk.
Approaching the meadows just as the sun re-appeared.
Meadows in bloom.
The meadows are a real mix of wild flowers. Mostly Buttercups at this time with Red Clover, Pig Nut and Meadow Cranesbill.
Cranesbill and Buttercup.
The River Swale. Sadly today I didnt have time to extend my walk but I will re-visit the area again shortly.
I returned to Muker by re-tracing my steps through the meadows.
Barn in the back lanes of Muker. This is quite a special scene to me, it was the subject for one of my first paintings sold as a professional artist. The water-butt wasn't there then!
I returned home via the moor road that passes Tan Hill Inn.
The moor was alive with birdlife like this Golden Plover.
Approaching Sleightholme. The little lamb on the right was new-born, possibly in the last hour or two.
Bonus for the day was getting this shot of a Common Snipe, taken from the car. Hardly a major walk for the afternoon but always a joy to visit our neighbouring dale. home | On Location | Dales and Howgills
