11th June 2010- Swaledale

This afternoon I had a bit of business to do over towards Swaledale so it was a good excuse to get the dogs into the car and combine business with pleasure and a bit of a walk. It was mostly sunny but some big patches of cloud added some interest to the landscape.

The Stang.

The road between Teesdale and Arkengarthdale passes up over The Stang where the forestry is partly being cleared. The are good views over Teesdale and away to the right is the industrial area of Middlesborough.

Early Purple Orchids.

In one place there is a large patch of Early Purple Orchids right by the roadside.

Early Purple Orchids

They are in full bloom at the moment.

Powder House Arkengarthdale.

The Powder House, Arkengarthdale with Scar House behind. The Powder House was used to store explosives during the industrial mining period.

Muker

Parking in Muker we passed the village institute to start the short walk.

Swaledale meadows, Muker

Approaching the meadows just as the sun re-appeared.

Swaledale meadows

Meadows in bloom.

Swaledale flower meadow

The meadows are a real mix of wild flowers. Mostly Buttercups at this time with Red Clover, Pig Nut and Meadow Cranesbill.

Muker meadows

Cranesbill and Buttercup.

River Swale

The River Swale. Sadly today I didnt have time to extend my walk but I will re-visit the area again shortly.

Muker meadows

I returned to Muker by re-tracing my steps through the meadows.

Muker village

Barn in the back lanes of Muker. This is quite a special scene to me, it was the subject for one of my first paintings sold as a professional artist. The water-butt wasn't there then!

Tan Hill Inn

I returned home via the moor road that passes Tan Hill Inn.

Golden Plover

The moor was alive with birdlife like this Golden Plover.

Sleightholme

Approaching Sleightholme. The little lamb on the right was new-born, possibly in the last hour or two.

Snipe

Bonus for the day was getting this shot of a Common Snipe, taken from the car.

Hardly a major walk for the afternoon but always a joy to visit our neighbouring dale.
