19th May 2009 Skiddaw and Lonscale Fell

A promising weather forecast enticed us to take on Skiddaw by this odd route. As normal this was due to the fact that I needed to visit the locations of the Wainwright sketches. Apart form the summit of Skiddaw I don't think we saw another person all day.

Gale Road end lo0king to the Skiddaw range.

We took the path that leads round to the west face on Lonscale Fell whilst most walkers pass the Howell monument en route to Skiddaw, Grisedale Pike behind.

Sun on us but rain in Borrowdale.

The delightful path that contours round the side of the fell.

Dark clouds over St Johns in the Vale.

Great Calva.

Approaching Skiddaw House in the trees. Our route was to take up over Sale How, the rounded rise on the left.

Skirting behind Skiddaw House.

The stake on Sale How.

Skiddaw in profile. Our path was up the sunlit ridge and then to turn right to follow the fence which is basically at the bottom of the bank of scree.

The fence-line looking back in the direction of Skiddaw Little Man.

Cambridge Crags, now we had to pick up the path on the ridge to the summit.

Skiddaw summit. Heading south in the direction of Skiddaw Little Man I then had to traverse the steep and pathless scree slopes for my next location.

Fox Bield and Long Side.

Approaching Little Man this retrospective shot of my route shows Fox Bield on the scree, its the small outcrop of rocks just above the dark outline of the Ullock Pike ridge.

Skiddaw Little Man with Lonscale Fell and Blencathra.

To the south the weather was not quite as good.

Lonscale Fell summit.

Adopting the prone position as I take my photos.

An aerial view of Burnt Horse ridge as seen from near East Buttress. The path and wall along the top was our route of descent.

Now much lower down we were back on the path and heading back along the path we came along earlier in the day.

Heading back to the car at Gale Road End. With excellent views down St John's in the Vale.
