Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

This route was part of Andy's fascinating and unique project "The Wainwrights in Colour". Click here

19th August 2010, Seat Sandal

Another of those days where I had to reply on a plan B to turn the day around. My initial route was cut short by low cloud. Fortunately the second option was far more fruitful.

Brown Cove Crags

Heading up towards Brown Cove Crags from Swirls.

Herdwick

 Defending the route.

Thirlmere

A dull and overcast scene as we ascend the fell.

Skiddaw and High rigg

A patch of Light on High Rigg.

Helvellyn Gill

Helvellyn Gill, to obtian my reference I had to descend this wet grassy slope to the foot of the falls.

Helvellyn Gill

Job done, now a re-ascent back up towards the path. Rain began to fall making the going more difficult.

Brown Cove Crags

Brown Cove Crags, by the time I reached the rough ground I was in thick mist. Going on would have been a waste of time as any references I needed would be obscured by cloud. I retreated back the way I came.

Armboth Fell

Armboth Fell has a patch of bright sun. My thoughts were turning to salvaging something from the day.

Raise Beck

After spending an hour or so in Grasmere the weather showed signs of improvement so i headed back up to Dunmail Raise from where I headed up Raise Beck.

Helm Crag

Helm Crag across the valley.

Raise beck

The rough bed of Raise Beck.

Waterfalls Raise Beck

The cascades of Raise Beck were the location of one of my references but it was not easy to find.

Raise Beck

Steel Fell from Raise Beck.

Raise Beck

I thought that I may have found my reference along the beck but I wasnt fully convinced as it wasn't exactly as AW had drawn it.

Cascades Raise Beck

There were plenty of possibilities as the beck has a splendid range of cascades.

Raise Beck

This was a potential find but the water doesn't flow as shown.

Fairfield

At the top of the ravine Fairfield came into view. From here I headed "off-road" to Seat Sandal summit.

St Sunday Crag

St Sunday Crag and cloud shadows.

Grasmere from Seat Sandal

Grasmere from Seat Sandal's west cairn.

Great Gable and Steel Fell

Cloud capped Great Gable over a sunny Steel Fell.

Seat Sandal

Seat Sandal summit

Seat Sandal summit

St Sunday Crag past the cairn.

Fairfield

Light on the slopes of Fairfield.

Ullswater

Zooming in on Ullswater.

Seat sandal summit tarn

A small tarn on Seat Sandal

Gavel crag Seat Sandal

Gavel Crag. This is one of the references that I have already painted showing the flat face of where a large amount of the crag has fallen away.

Grisedale Tarn

Grisedale Tarn.

zeta

Zeta waits patiently.

Fairfield and Grisedale Tarn

Fairfield and Grisedale Tarn.

Raise Beck

I wasnt convinced about the reference for the waterfalls in Raise Beck so in stead of walking elsewhere I descended down the ghyll ensuring that by the time I had returned to the car the correct photo was secured.
