Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

20th February 2009. Caudale Moor.

Caudale Moor, otherwise known as Stony Cove Pike, was one fell that I had yet to "tick-off" so I planned a route that would take in this top as well as a couple of others. The weather looked favourable and now the snow had retreated to the gullies leaving the tops free.

For some reason (which I still can't work out), I left the car near the Cow Gate Park which was actually closed due to works. I would have been better parking in Hartsop but then I would not have got this view of Hartsop Dodd with Caudale Moor behind and to the right. The simplest route from here would have been to climb the ridge to Hartsop Dodd and then to Caudale Moor, however, I needed to get some references from the ridge to Caudale Moor so was to head for that first.

Dovedale from the road to Brotherswater Inn. the sunshine looked promising.

Climbing the north-west ridge of Caudale Moor, it follows a distinct groove.

From Caudale Moor Quarry there is an impressive view to Patterdale.

Red Screes and the Kirkstone Pass from higher up on the ridge. Low cloud was filling the southern valleys.

A patch of sun catches Hartsop Dodd on the right of the photograph.

Nearing the top of the ridge.

Mark Atkinson's memorial on the plateau of Caudale Moor.

The summit cairn of Stony Cove Pike (Caudale Moor) with High Street on the left and Thornthwaite Crag on the right.

The Ill Bell ridge.

I now followed the ridge north to Hartsop Dodd.

The weathered post that marks the true summit of the fell.

The cairn near the summit of Hartsop Dodd.

Looking down into Dovedale.

An aerial view of our start point. from Hartsop Dodd I had to return along the ridge to Stony Cove Pike.

From the ridge there is a good view of our earlier route up the steep ridge of Caudale Moor and the quarry.

Thornthwaite Crag from the ridge.

Following the wall down into Thresthwaite Mouth.

Climbing up and out of the cloud that hung on Thresthwaite Mouth, here looking back to Hartsop Dodd. I was now heading along the ridge to Gray Crag.

The gang at Gray Crag summit.

Hayeswater and Rest Dodd. I was now to head back along the ridge to Thornthwaite Crag.

The cairn has now gone from "point 2331" on the ridge. I was going up to Thornthwaite Crag, directly in front, before heading down to Hayeswater Gill via the partly snow filled ravine seen here on the left.

The beacon appears out of the mist, no views today.

The ravine that I had just descended. Not really a well recognised route, very little sign of a path until Hayeswater is reached.

A herd of Red Deer Hinds on the slopes of Gray Crag.

Hayeswater and The Knott.

Once past the dam there is a good track leading down out of the valley.

A rather dull Gray Crag from near Wath Bridge.

Passing through Hartsop and nearly back to the start. Another good day out taking in four fells by an unusual route.
