20th May 2009 Iron Crag and Roughten Gill

There are walks which I plan which don't include to the top of a major fell. This is one of those, a route which did get us to the top of Iron Crag and then an interesting descent alongside the falls of Roughten Gill near High Pike.

Brae Fell as we climb onto the moor above Fell Side.

Patches of sun

Looking down Grains Gill.

Brae Fell from near Birk Moss. ( The sketch I was looking for from near here has already been completed and can be seen in the Brae Fell page. click here )

The regular cuts on the peat were made to supply fuel to the smelt mill lower in the valley.

Cairn on Iron Crag, Knott behind. From here we headed down the path of Roughten Gill.

This is the lowest of the series of waterfalls.

Lunch by another cascade.

Contouring round under Iron Crag.

The lichen covered remains of the old mine buildings.

Making friends.

Looking back up the gill from the remains of the old smelt mill.

A sheep's chorus. We returned to the car at Fell Side shortly after this before heading round to our second walk of the day.
