Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

This route was part of Andy's fascinating and unique project "The Wainwrights in Colour". Click here

21st. September 2010, Gowbarrow Fell.

It was a bit of a late decision today to head over to the Lakes but as the weather seemed reasonable and I needed a couple of urgent references I jumped into the car and took the dogs over towards Ullswater. To make the most of my trip I did a short walk near Brotherswater first to add a couple of other locations into my book.

From the path to Hartsop Hall the recent work can be seen that has repaired the banks of the Goldrill Beck

The purpose for this short walk was to obtain the references from the previous viewpoint and from here. Unfortunately the birch trees in the foreground obscure the required scene so a re-visit will be done in winter when hopefully the trees will have shed their leaves and opened up the view. The large Oak on the left is just as AW drew it, just bigger.

From here I returned to the car and drove up to the Dockray Road, parked at the old quarry and headed off to Gowbarrow Fell.

Aira Force

Passing this sign we dropped down to the river gorge.

High Force

Previously I had obtained a reference from this point of High Force but had not been sure that it was correct.

By going downstream, crossing the river and returning to the point on the other bank I could see that this was the correct location. from here I continued on the Dockray footpath.

Ullswater

Ullswater from the ascent. The route I was taking was up alongside the wall that runs to the north of the summit, not a AW route but obviously now well used.

Footpath repairs have had to be undertaken over the boogy section of this route.

Once we had paid the customary visit to the Force we headed back upstream to the car park. it was not a bad way to give the dogs a walk, shame the weather wasn't brighter but at least Bailey got to tick of another Wainwright!
