24th January 2010- Glen Ogle Trail

I have read about this walk in several books including "Scotland's 100 Best Walks" by Cameron McNeish and as the cloud base was low on the high tops we opted for this relatively easy walk. Like most of the weekend the weather was not the best for good photography but I hope the photographs give a flavour of the walk.

Some of these images will contribute to paintings, please do not copy or reproduce these images.

The route begins at the small village of Lochearnhead on the A85.

Before long we reached the old railway line which gave us this fine view over Loch Earn.

A snow cap on Meall a' Mhadaidh.

We now head north on the old railway bed. This was once the Stirling to Oban Line.

Easy walking with fine views. The main A85 road can be seen lower down.

Viaducts take the line up the glen.

Bailey is still "under training" but loves to carry sticks.

Zeta stays with me.

We had a refreshment break under this bridge as it was now raining. This was the furthest part of our walk on the line but the route could carry on much further, this is also part of the National Cycleway Network.

Re-tracing our steps slightly we crossed this stile to head back down the glen on the Old Military Road.

A dull view down the glen.

An old bridge on the military road.

The viaducts which we crossed earlier.

The route crosses the A85.

Nearing Lochearnhead we pass by another viaduct, this one from the Crieff to Lochearnhead Line.

Swans coming into land on the ice.

Majestic swan.

We soon returned to the car and as the afternoon still had some life left we took a drive to the nearby Loch Voil.

Ice and light on Loch Voil.

Much of the loch was still frozen and on the shore were large sheets of ice.

To end the day we paid a visit to Balquhidder and the grave of the notorious Rob Roy.
