Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

23rd- 28th September 2007. The Glen Affric area.

Camping at Cannich, the idea was to use this as a base to explore the three glens of Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Glen Strathfarrar. The forecast was pretty reasonable for the week but this was Scotland in the Autumn!

25th September Glen Affric.

Parking at the head of Loch Beinn a Mheadhoin we planned to walk up to the two Munroes of Tom a Choinich and Toll Creagach.

Glen Affric
A spell of bright weather as we ascended the path into Allt Toll Easa.
Allt Toll Easa
The Allt Toll Easa, quite full with inspiring colours. We were heading for the ridge behind and it now started to rain...again.
Allt Toll Easa
Through the rain, looking back on our route, we had followed the river from the Loch in the far distance.
ptarmigan
A (wet) Ptarmigan at close quarters. The advantage of having pointers with us! (Zeta put up a pack of 30/40 shortly after this, the largest group I have seen to date.)
Toll Creagach
The summit cairn of Toll Creagach- all drenched! There was nothing to be gained by going to the other top in these conditions.

Toll Creagach
As we descended we broke back into brighter weather, as you can see,we were all looking a bit wet!

Allt Toll Easa
Patches of brightness as we followed our line of ascent back into the Glen.

Red Deer Allt Toll Easa
A herd of red deer on the slopes of the hill. Not a brilliant day but at least this time we had reached the summit of one of the Munroes.

25th September

Glen Affric was our aim for today and hopefully achieve the tops of 2 Munroes, Toll Creagach and Tom a Choinich.

Re-tracing our outward route in better weather.

26th September

It had been a very cold night in the tent and the mountain forecast was the best so far. This promised to be a good day so we headed for the further reaches of Glen Affric.

Snow on the far hills.

The Keeper's cottage at Affric Lodge.

The higher we headed the more snow topped hills we could see.

A food break on our first snow of the year!

In Coire Leachavie with Sgurr na Lapaich behind.

On the bealach, sun ,snow and no wind.

Looking South-west from near the summit of Mam Sodhail, the Cuillins of Skye in the distance.

Ideal location for Ptarmigan.

The summit cairn of Mam Sodhail.

And on the summit of Carn Eige with Beinn Fhionnlaidh in the sun. This is where we met the only other person during the whole day.

A view back to Mam Sodhail, our route descended the ridge on the right.

Snow showers in Glen Affric as we approach the start.

27th September

A day in Glen Cannich would give us a route to the tops of two more Munroes, Carn nan Gobhar and Sgurr na Lapaich, weather permitting.

Following the route out of Coire an t-sith we reached the bealach with Creag Dubh behind.

One of the summit cairns of Carn nan Gobhar.

Sgurr na Lapaich from Carn nan Gobhar.

A Mountain Hare amongst the rocks.

The route ahead to the next top.
