Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

23rd- 28th September 2007. The Glen Affric area.

Camping at Cannich, the idea was to use this as a base to explore the three glens of Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Glen Strathfarrar. The forecast was pretty reasonable for the week but this was Scotland in the Autumn!

26th September Carn Eige

It had been a very cold night in the tent and the mountain forecast was the best so far. This promised to be a good day so we headed for the further reaches of Glen Affric.

Glen affric
Overnight there had been a decent snowfall on the higher tops as can be seen here across Loch Affric as we begin today's route.

Ascending into Coire Leachavie there were spectacular views to the south west.

Carn Eige
After a steep descent off Mam Sodhail and then a re-ascent we were soon on the summit of Carn Eige. Carn Eige is the highest hill north of the Great Glen. (1183m)

carn eige
From Carn Eige our route was to take us along the Pinnacle Ridge towards Stob Coire Dhomhnuill.

Carn Eige
The light was just about perfect on the ridge.

The pinnacles are easily avoided by a path on the right.

Carn Eige
Dramatic views down to Loch Mullardoch to the north. We descended off the ridge before Tom a Choinich.

Gleann nam Fiadh
Now it was a long walk out through Gleann nam Fiadh.

Glen Affric
And as the sun was setting the late light caught the snow showers over Loch Affric.
