27th April 2010- Blencathra

A different day for me today as unusually I was "with company" and as the day had been pre-arranged I couldn't back out even though the weather forecast looked like low cloud would spoil any chance of reference gathering. However, upon arrival at Threlkeld I was pleasanlty surprised to see the last remnants of the low cloud dispersing. My intention was to venture up Blencathra by a new route to me, Hall's Fell and then to descend via Doddick Fell.

Threlkeld

As I was early for my meeting I took the opportunity to get a look at the route from across the valley. An ascent up Hall's Fell begins just above the small green wood and onto the heather covered broad ridge. Half way up it narrows to a fine ridge before topping out at Blencathras summit. Doddick Fell our route of descent is the ridge on the mid-right in shadow.

Gategill

Parking at Threlkeld we contoured round the fell over Gate Gill Beck which is rather dry.

Hall's fell

Gaining height on the ridge with Clough Head across the valley.

Hall's Fell

As the ridge narrows the summit of the fell comes into view.

Hall's Fell

Following the crest of the ridge is a challenging route but there is an easier path off to the side for part of the way.

Doddick Fell

Over to the right is the jagged top of Doddick Fell.

The middle section.

Hall's Fell

At some point on this route hands may have to be used to tackle some of the rock steps. Less used than Sharp Edge this is a great route to gain the summit of Blencathra with a bit of excitement.

The White Cross near Foule Crag. From here we went to take a look over Sharp Edge.

Sharp Edge

Sharp Edge, surprisingly with not a person in view either on the ridge or down to the tarn.

Behind Richard is the ridge of our ascent, Hall's Fell.

Doddick Fell

The beginning of the descent route, Doddick Fell. Less rocky than its neighbour, Doddick is another good route to climb Blencathra.

Doddick Fell

Steep and with some scree care is still needed.

Doddick Fell

The path is actually little worn in places.

Threlkeld

Our route of Doddick was followed by a simple countour of the fell back to the car. Only a half day's outing but still very enjoyable and great to explore two of Blencathras fine ridges.
