7th. July 2010- Great Asby Scar

Recently I was having a good look at the map that I used for my Nine Standards Rigg walk and there showed an expanse of rocky features just to the south of Appleby. I bit of research threw up the information that this was Great Asby Scar, one of the largest areas of Limestone pavement to be found in the region. So I thought I would investigate. There are not many photographs here but hopefully you will get a flavour of this interesting landscape. A bit more sunshine would have helped on this walk but it was a good place to explore and keep in mind for a brighter day.

Once again, all the photos are from my small Samsung digital camera no use of filters etc, just a case of luck and right place, right time.

Soon you come across this information sign.

The Limestone Pavement. Unlike the pavement near Malham where we were recently the rocks are really quite rough, possibly due to the lack of wear by walkers.

Ferns rise out of the crevices.

There is a raised platform of rock on the pavement shown on the map as a fort. I had it in my mind that all limestone pavements were on the level, not here though.

On the top of the platform are the remains of several ancient constructions.

It looks as if the caps of rock are floating on the grass.

Well weathered rock features. Some of the Grykes (the cracks) are actually quite deep, no place to drop the camera! Note the conflicting angles of the slopes.

A short walk back to the car followed but it was an evening well spent investigating a new location.
