Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

This route was part of Andy's fascinating and unique project "The Wainwrights in Colour". Click here

1st December 2008 . Coniston Fells.

The continuing cold weather means that snow still lies on the highest fells. I planned to do a route over some of the Coniston Fells to "tick-off" some of the references for the project. I drove to Coniston and parked up high on the Walna Scar road.

Apologies for the graininess of the photographs, the extremely windy conditions meant that I had to set the camera on a fast setting.

Looking north to the fells from my start point the weather didn't look too promising.

The icy track as we gain height.

Cove Bridge over Tover Beck.

Sun through the clouds further south.

Soon the first sun lit the face of The Old Man.

The shelter on the Walna Scar road, making a good kennel. from here I headed back down the road to pick up a mine track to Blind Tarn quarry.

Blind Tarn quarry. I took a direct route from here to the top of Brown Pike.

A Painting of this scene is currently in progress click here

Brown Pike summit and a distant Black Combe.

Looking back from the ridge to Buck Pike. Blind Tarn far below.

Dow Crag on the left and Swirl How on the right of Buck Pike summit.

The Scafell range.

Not time to hang around today.

Down Easy Gully to Coniston Water.

Nearing Dow Crag summit.

Another lone walker on the ridge. From Dow Crag the route took me round over Goats Hause.

Goats Hause.

Rising up on the path to the Old Man. Sun across on Brown Pike.

In the other direction, Harter Fell over Goats Hause.

Near the summit the sun picks out the buttresses of Dow Crag.

The summit cairn of Coniston Old man. The winds here were very strong, making it quite difficult to stand up.

The route ahead over Brim Fell to Swirl How.

Wetherlam from the Brim Fell ridge.

The Old Man from near Brim Fell summit.

The neat cairn on Brim Fell summit.

Sun and spindrift.

Back towards Brim Fell and Dow Crag as we head to Swirl How.

Winter Scafells.

Swirl How.

Crinkle Crags through to Bowfell over Great Carrs. A descent of the Prison Band lead to Swirl Hause.

Levers Water. I would head down the path to the left of this picture to the valley.

Levers Water.

The path from Paddy End mine up to boulder valley.

Low Water Beck and the Pudding Stone.

Last light on Black Sails and Wetherlam.

A colourful evening sky as I return to the car. Another good day on the fells in testing conditions.
