10th May 2009 Longslededale

This was to be my second walk for the day, a route in Longsleddale that would take in the fells of Tarn Crag and Grey Crag visiting some of the other wainwright references along the way.

The small hamlet of Sadgill at the start of this route.

The good valley track leads up to the head of Longsleddale.

The old quarry road looking back down the dale. After all the years the track is in remarkable condition.

The falls of the river Sprint.

The replacement bridge on the quarry road.

Wrengill Quarry.

Unusual slate pillars at the quarry, Tarn Crag behind.

I was now heading to Mosedale. This view shows Harter Fell and the fixed footpath to its summit. Its not perfect but it is blending in to the fellside since I first photographed it a couple of years ago.

My diversion took me to Mosedale Cottage. A direct cross-country route from here was to take me to Tarn Crag.

Passing close to a herd of Red Deer.

Sun on the distant Howgills from Tarn Crag summit cairn.

The survey post on the summit.

A direct route to Grey Crag would take you across this low wet marsh, best to head left and skirt the boggy ground.

Grey Crag summit and Longsleddale.

It's tempting!

The neat cairn on Harrop Pike before I head towards Mere Crag.

Watched from afar.

The survey post on Great Howe.

Afternoon light in Longsleddale. The route I took earlier can be seen in the valley bottom.

Sun on their backs.

A patchwork of colours as I leave the dale. Not my intended day out but still a worth while couple of short routes. Longsleddale is now on my list for a return visit.
