14th October 2008 . Place Fell and Glenridding Dodd.

Bright in the morning and rain later. That was the forecast for today so another early rise meant that I should make the most of any decent conditions. This may be my last outing for a couple of weeks at I am committed to being in the gallery during the Teesdale Open Studios event which begins on Saturday. Not stunning photographs but hopefully an insight to the two walks.

Dawn breaks over Ullswater.

After parking in Patterdale I walked through the village en-route to Boardale Hause path.

As the path rises the Kirkstone Pass comes into view.

From higher up looking back towards Glenridding and Ullswater.

A lone Fell Pony near Boardale Hause. The light today was very flat but at least it wasn't raining.

Red deer Stags could be heard rutting from quite close by. These Hinds were grazing on the slopes of the fell.

Brotherswater under grey skies.

The badly eroded footpath on the side of Place Fell has recently been repaired using the soil inversion and pitched path methods. Exposed soil banks have been covered with a blue "paste" which is a support medium for grass seed. Already it can be seen to be doing its job with young shoots of grass appearing.

Nearing the summit of Place Fell.

Place Fell summit with Ullswater behind. The High Pennines away to the right.

Descending the fell via the old track under Birk Fell. Zeta poses.

A floating island on Ullswater.

Birks and St. Sunday Crag from the Howtown /Patterdale path.

Autumn colours.

Returning to Patterdale.

A short drive to Brotherswater but low cloud ahead meant another route I had planned was cancelled.

I decided to return to Glenridding and headed up the slopes of Glenridding Dodd.

The cloud had dropped to obscure the tops of the higher fells like Sheffield Pike.

Low cloud also now enveloped the summit of the Dodd but I did get a brief glimpse of Glenridding below from one of the several cairns near the top.

Now coming on to rain even Ullswater was difficult to define. I headed off the hill at the right time, heavy rain continued for the rest of the afternoon.
