14th. June 2009 Stybarrow Dodd area

Using the good weather we headed off for a Sunday afternoon outing beginning at Glenridding. The enabled me to tick off some references that I needed for the project as well as visiting a couple of new fells.

Heading up Glenridding towards the old mines. Raise, our first fell, is the distant horizon to the right of the tree.

Above the old mine buildings which are now used as outdoor centres and a youth hostel, looking back to Ullswater.

yet another call-out for the Mountain Rescue Team. Two land-rovers and an Air Ambulance en-route to and incident which was taking place in the vicinity of Striding Edge. The helicopter flew low over us later in the direction of Carlisle.

Our route followed the old mine aqueduct and chimney that takes a direct route up towards raise.

Catstycam and Helvellyn from The Stang.

The chimney with Raise behind.

Ullswater and Sheffield Pike from the rock tor on the eastern slopes of Raise.

The neat summit cairn of Raise with Skiddaw distant. From here is was a short walk to White Side.

Helvellyn from White Side summit.

Raise from White Side to where we were now to return.

Hart Side glows as we descend eastwards off Stybarrow Dodd.

and Swirral Edge also catches the light.

As the light fades Ullswater reflects the glow of the evening clouds.

Sheffield Pike.

Recognise this? See Book 1, Sheffield Pike 8. Light was now almost too poor for photographs.

Last fell of the evening, Glenridding Dodd summit in the dusk. The time was 10.10pm, and time for a quick descent so that we could grab a quick drink in The Traveller's Rest, Glenridding before we headed home after an enjoyable and quiet time on the Eastern Fells.
