15th July 2009 Hard Knott

This was a bit of an unusual day today where I needed to do one straightforward fell so I picked on Hard Knott. The weather as we headed through Penrith was awful with quite heavy rain and low cloud but I was hopeful that it would improve.

By the time we reached Ullswater the weather had improved.

A nice day for a boat trip.

Heading out of Great Langdale, sun and rain.

and the same conditions in Mickleden.

Heading up Eskdale, now on our walk.

Sheep also heading for the hills.

The falls of Lingcove Beck.

Lingcove Bridge.

Plenty of water in the falls after last nights rain.

The view down the dale as we gain height.

Tumbling waters in the gorge.

It wasn't long though before low cloud had come in, this should be a view of Crinkle Crags.

A tarn near Hard Knott summit, Bog Asphodel and Cotton Grass in bloom. There was little to view otherwise. The summit of the fell was really just cloud so we passed over it and carried on to find my next location.

The Steeple or Eskdale Needle from the south. It was 8.20pm and given the conditions I was pleased how this photo came out.

and the more impressive view of the same feature. From here we bypassed Border End and headed for the top of Hard Knott Pass.

Light was fading as we returned to the car parked near Brotherkeild.

To find that someone had decided that what I owned should really belong to them. A smashed window was fortunately the only loss. These remote areas are targets locations where car thieves operate. The lesson is- don't leave valuables in the car.

It was not a bad day after all and another fell off the list. However due to the low cloud Hard Knott will get another visit from me in the not too distant future.
