Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

16th January 2009. Sallows and Sour Howes

Another day of low cloud and less than perfect conditions for good photographs. Still, as I had some work to do in Kendal I headed up to Troutbeck and set of up the Garburn Pass to take in these two fells.

Moss covered walls at the lower section of the path.

Low cloud restricted the views. I had planned to do Sour Howes first but I changed plans and carried up to the top of the pass and get to Sallows in the hope that the cloud would lift by then.

Sections of this ancient route are now badly eroded. Without repair it will soon become a deep channel for water.

The only hint of brightness, Troutbeck Park Farm sits under the Tongue.

At the head of the pass I took the wet route up to Sallows. Behind me Yoke was in cloud.

The rocky parapet that is Sallows summit.

I then headed towards Sour Howes following the path by the wall.

Approaching Sour Howes summit.

The actual summit could be one of several mounds but this the recognised one. Currently it sports a few stones which serve as a cairn. from here I headed north west to Applethwaite quarry.

Applethwaite quarry. Obviously quite an operation at some time.

The old quarry weighbridge as mentioned by Wainwright in Sour Howes 4.

As I returned to the car via the Garburn Pass route it came on to rain. It was a nice little route out which I look forward to returning to in the near future.
