Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

17th March 2009. Harter Fell, Branstree and Selside Pike.

This route was one I had set to do on 23rd January but due to the amount of snow I was unable to complete it on that occasion. Today I took a gamble as the forecast was actually for a cloudy day and as long as the cloud base was high I should be able to acheive my aims. As you will see at the bottom of this page this was to be a very special day out on the fells.

Travelling by Haweswater, low cloud over the higher fells did not look favourable.

Sunlight and shadows on the fellside as I head up towards Blea Water.

Patches of blue sky over Long Stile.

I waited for sometime at Blea Water for the sun to fall on the crags of Mardale Ill Bell.

As I headed to Small Water I passed by the marsh of Blea Water Beck, it was full of croaking frogs, is Spring here?

C'mon in the waters lovely. Zeta in Small Water.

One of the stone shelters by the path to Nan Bield Pass.

The boundary stone on Adam Seat.

A hazy view of Longsleddale from Adam Seat.

Every pool of water at Gatescarth Pass was filled with croaking frogs.

Enjoying the sun.

The High Street plateau from the slopes of Branstree.

The summit of Branstree is marked by a small cairn and a ground level trig point.

The lower cairn on Anglecrag Pike with Selside Pike behind.

Near the slate cairn there is a great view of the remote Swindale.

The Old Corpse road leads back down towards Mardale.

Ruins above Haweswater.

A patch of sun on the water as we follow the road for a short distance back to the car. Another great day with some patches of warm Spring sunshine.

The day has however been made much more poignant by some sad news. Today (Wednesday) we have  lost a very important member of our team. Zoe has with great regret been put to sleep after being a fantastic companion for us, and mother to Zeta. She showed very few signs of illness but after an investigative operation today was found to be badly infected with cancer which according to our vet meant she had only possibly weeks to live and those weeks would involved a rapid decline in her health. We took the very difficult decision and are comforted in the fact that her very last full day was being out on the Lakeland Fells with Zeta and me on a fine Spring day.

Nearly 12 years of fun and a few fells short of her 214.

She will be missed.
