19th October 2011 Grey Crag to Shipman Knotts

The valley of Longsleddale lies at the south east corner of the Lake District and is possibly one of the quietest in the area. Today's route takes in four fells at the head of the valley.

Skipman Knotts

Blue skies over Shipman Knotts as we head up Longsldedale.

Sadgill

Parking at the small hamlet of Sadgill.

Longsleddale

As we ascend the slopes of Grey Crag the view of the valley opens up.

Sadgill

The route comes up this gully.

Longsleddale

The view from Great Howe.

Grey Crag

Grey Crag summit, wonderful clear views today of the Howgills.

tarn crag

The depression between Grey Crag and Tarn Crag is a bog and the best route is to follow the fenceline to the right of this photo.

Tarn Crag

Striding out too the summit but as usual Bailey gets there first.

Tarn Crag

The first thing to do when you reach your 100th wainwright is update your Facebook Status!

Tarn Crag

Beautiful blue skies reflected in the pool by the survey column.

Wrengill

Harter Fell and Gatesgarth gap.

Wrengill

For us it was a direct descent down ito the valley following the fence.

Longsleddale

The new bridge on the quarry road.

Sprint Gill

Waterfalls in Sprint Gill.

Longsleddale

The view back down Longsleddale. This would have been a good escape route back to the car but we turned back up towards Wrengill Quarry.

Wrengill quarry

Wrengill quarry, my favourite site of industrial working in the Lake District.

Wrengill

Shadows on slate.

Wrengill Quarry

Just needs a bit of oil!.

Wrengill quarry

Tarn Crag from the quarry.

Wrengill Quarry

Wren Gill. More like limestone country as the beck disappears underground.

Wrengill quarry

Crossing Wren Gill (camera to hand just in case she fell in- sadly Fran is more sure footed than that!).

Tarn crag

Tarn Crag across the valley as we took the direct route up to Kentmere Pike summit.

Harter Fell

We soon reached the ridge and met the path that comes from Harter Fell.

Ill Bell Ridge

Across the kentmere valley the distinctive Ill Bell Ridge.

Branstree

Snow shower behind Branstree.

kentmere Pike

Bailey maintains look-out as the food comes out on Kentmere Pike summit.

Kentmere Pike

The cairn on Kentmere Pike with Harter Fell behind.

kentmere Pike

Great views but cold in the wind.

Ill Bell from Kentmere Pike

Scafell Pikes over the shoulder of Ill Bell.

Grey Crag

Grey Crag and the distant Howgills.

Shipman Knotts

We were heading to Shipman Knotts on the right via the rise on the left (Goat Scar.)

Longslededale

Looking up the valley from Goat Scar, Branstree being the round fell.

Goat crags

Wonderful light over Coniston Fells.

Shipman Knotts

The descent from Shipman Knotts is steep in places.

longsleddale

Soon we reach the Sadgill Stile End track and follow it down to the car at Sadgill.

A great afternoon on the fells above this remote valley we only spoke to one other walker on the whole route.
