2nd. June 2009 Helm Crag to Steel Fell

Following a meeting at Rheged near Penrith I drove to Grasmere to re-stock on artists materials before setting off on my walk for the day from near Low Mill bridge.

Heaton Cooper

The Heaton Cooper Studio, Grasmere  where I purchase my artists materials.

Gill Foot grasmere

Gill Foot from where I ascended the slopes of Helm Crag.

Helm Crag

The green slopes of Helm Crag.

I had attained the top by the northern crags and got this unusual view of The Howitzer.

A sense of scale.

Getting one's bearings. The Coniston Fells behind.

Descending the western flank of Helm Crag. Tarn Crag in the centre. In one of my usual "odd" routes I was now heading up Far Easedale, the valley on the right.

Stythwaite Steps, the footbridge and Calf Crag.

A lone Coast to Coaster heads down to Grasmere.

and these two young Germans were nearing the end of their adventure as they were doing the C2C East to West.

Waterfalls in Far Easedale. From here it would be an obvious route to head up to the ridge but I was to turn back and head for Deer Bield Crags under Tarn Crag.

Deer Bield Crag.

A Navy Sea King passes low overhead from the Langdale direction, hopefully just on a jolly.

Blea Rigg from near Tarn Crag summit with the Coniston Fells behind.

Langdale Pikes from the cairn on the lower viewpoint. I was now to head for Blea Rigg which I did so by descending the Greenhead Crag ridge instead of taking the shorter route past Codale Tarn.

I was after a look at these rocks of course, then I progressed up to Easedale tarn.

Easedale tarn from the site of the old refreshment hut.

Belles Knott from the path to Dungeon Ghyll.

Evening sun in Easedale. On reaching the ridge I turned left (south) to visit the top of Blea Rigg.

The summit of Blea Rigg is the pointed mound here in the centre.

The "other" summit from the proper one with the Pikes behind.

Codale and Easedale Tarns viewed from the ridge to Sergeant Man.

Stickle Tarn.

Just dozing.

Great Gable from Sergeant Man. From here a short stroll to High Raise.

Evening skies above High Raise.

The hills to the south.

Low White Stones and Helvellyn. Now off east towards Deep Slack.

Too good to miss.......

Splooosh!...

Luuverly!...

Following the old fence down Deep Slack.

Late sun as we approach Calf Crag. Spot the lone Red Deer on the left.

Just catching the light on calf Crag.

Steel Fell with Dollywagon Pike and St Sunday Crag through the col. my route was round to the left of this picture so no chance of getting there before the sun had gone.

Steel Fell and evening sky. Number 199 of this "project" round.

And to the north the evening light over Skiddaw and Blencathra. Another great afternoon on the fells as I head down the south east ridge and back to the car.
