Early mists in Kentmere.

As the first light of day touches the crags.

Walking on the Garburn Pass past the Badger Rock. Even thought it was
slightly hazy the prospects looked good for a great day on the hills.

How wrong I was. By the time I reached here, at the top
of the Garburn Pass I could see almost nothing, on a clear day Wansfell
would be in view here. I could not even see Sallows, the fell to my left.
Reluctantly I turned round and headed back to the car. Days like this mean
that I can't acheive my goals of getting my Wainwright references.
I was determined to try and get something from the day
so I decided to take a slow route north in the car and headed towards
Martindale.
At least if the cloud had lifted I could at least take a
walk up to the summit of Steel Knotts and get one or two photo references.
This would also give me the option of extending my route if the weather
improved greatly.

I parked at St. Peter's church in Martindale and
ascended Steel Knotts.

Ullswater and Howtown. A dull day under a cover of low
cloud.

A distant patch of sun.

The very top of Pikeawassa, the rocky tor that forms the
summit of Steel Knotts. The head of Martindale covered by the cloud.

Zeta at Pikeawassa. instead of returning to the car I
opted to head along the ridge from here towards Wether Hill.

Amazingly in only a short time the clouds started to
break-up as can be seen in this view back towards Steel Knotts looking
down Fusedale.

Wether Hill was still cloud covered but it seemed to be
dispersing and things were looking positive.

Steel Knotts from the ruin.

A distant Catstycam from the ascent of Wether Hill.

Summit cairn on Wether Hill and a view to the south.

Haweswater Dam from the slopes of High Kop, Wether Hill.

My detour to High Kop was to locate this rarely visited
boundary stone. It's size, as indicated by the book made the task a bit
more difficult.

Sun on Birks as I descend Wether Hill towards Fusedale.

Spring in Fusedale

A bank of primroses.

A Mellguards Farmstead.

Howtown and Ullswater. What a difference from the
earlier conditions.
On returning to the car I decided to make the most of
this good spell of weather.

Loadpot Hill form Sandwick.

Field Barn, Martindale.

The old church, Martindale as I take to the slopes of
Beda Fell.

Afternoon sun and Ullswater.

Beda Fell ridge through to Hallin Fell.

Zeta and a Martindale backdrop.

Descending into the shadows.
On returning to the car I reckoned that there was still
time to make the most of this evening sun.

Once again parking at St. Peter's I headed up to Hallin
Fell.

Martindale evening.

Last light on Beda Fell.

Hallin Fell summit cairn.

Sunset over Hallin Fell.
What looked like being an abandoned day actually
resulted in being quite productive. Three short walks taking in 4 fells on
a pleasant spring afternoon. |
