Gallery Home >On location > 21/6/10 Andy Beck - On Location Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work. 21st June 2010. Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks As it was the longest day of the year I decided to head over to the Western Fells and do a spot of wild camping. I planned a fairly extensive route for the second day but as you will see, not everything goes according to plan. All of the photos below are taken with my simple Samsung camera, there colours are as they actually were. A case of right place, right time.
It was late evening as I headed towards my start point of Gatesgarth.
Late afternoon sun on Haystacks and a promising sky.
Parking at Gatesgarth we were to head up the steep ridge of Fleetwith Pike. As it was now 7.30pm I didnt expect to meet many other walkers.
As I climbed the ridge Buttermere was reflecting the sun behind me.
Across Warnscale Haystacks was still in sun, its only for a short period in the year that the sun hits this face of the fell as much as this.
Higher up the ridge Great Gable and a distant Scafell show over Green Crag.
A Peregrine wheels overhead.
The sun is sinking lower.
Dale Head with the Honister Pass road far below.
Fleetwith Pike Summit. I had arrived here in plenty of time to watch the sun set.
We waited for about 40 minutes on the summit for the late evening sun to glow.
It was worth the wait.
Great Gable
The suns last rays. I had planned this visit as I knew that it is only around the time of the summer solstice that the setting sun lines up with the length of the valley. Fortunately todays weather was perfect.
Heading on towards Haystacks.
Dubs Quarry bothy
Sunset from Little Round How.
Moving further round on the path the whole of Buttermere comes into view.
There was just enough light to get one of my needed references. Not many are obtained at 10.15pm!
The sunset from Blackbeck Gill.
Moonlight on Innominate Tarn. This is taken from the site where I pitched the tent. The light behind the island are other campers.
5am and the dawn hits Great Gable and Kirk Fell.
Pillar in the early sun. 5am was too early to get up so I had another hour in bed.
By 6.30 the scene was different, low cloud now capped the fells which I had planned to visit today.
After de-camping I headed to Haystacks summit. Clear fells all around.
Haystacks summit tarn.
High Crag. I spent 1 hour 40 min looking for just one reference, one which had eluded me on several previous visits.
Pillar from Haystacks.
Zooming in on Pillar Rock
North over Big Stack. The ridge of Fleetwith Pike that we ascended last evening is in shadow.
Going by the cloud conditions I knew that I was going to have to change my plans but I still carried on to my next objective. Here descending into Ennerdale.
Black Sail Youth Hostel where I sat for half an hour. The conditions showed no signs of improving so I decided to cut my day short and re-ascended to Scarth Gap.
Scarth Gap.
High Crag and the path to Buttermere.
Haystacks from the descent.
and Fleetwith Pike.
As usual, there were a good number of people heading up to Haystacks including this school party of about 40, glad I got there early!
Haystacks from Peggy's Bridge.
Fleetwith Pike from Gatesgarth. Once back at the car I headed up to Honister Pass to get another couple of references.
Looking down Honister Pass. Not the full day that I had planned but still a very productive and enjoyable outing
