23rd May 2010. Black Force, Howgills

As part of the Wainwright Society's Best of the rest Challenge we opted for a route in the Howgills Fells. This route would take in the impressive Black Force, a deep gill that leads off from Carling Gill Beck. Due to the unusually hot days that we have been having recently I left it until late afternoon to take on this walk, better for the dogs and possibly the good chance of watching the evening sun set.

  Carling Gill Bridge

A beautiful evening in prospect as we start our walk at 6.45

We left the road at this old marker stone (history unknown)

Carling Gill Beck

We followed the gill up into the valley, crossing the beck on many occasions fortunately the water levels were low.

Black Force restrictions

Soon we came across this notice. Our planned route was under restrictions due to breeding raptors so we had to make alternative arrangements.

Carling Gill Howgills

The narrow path above the gill as we approach the scar of Black Force.

Black Force Howgills

Black Force Gill. Our planned route would have been up the steep arete on the left. Instead we carried on up the main gill route.

Soon the gorge narrows.

Rising up through the gill there is an impressive view back to Black Force Scar.

Our amended route took us up Ulgill Rigg with the valley of Ulgill Beck below us to the left..

Linghaw Howgills

After supper it was a simple descent off the fell back to the car at Carling Gill Beck bridge. And we still have time for a pint on the way home in Tebay.

An enjoyable couple of hours out on the Howgill Fells as part of the Wainwright Society's Best of the Rest challenge.
