Barf from near
Beckstones. My route was direct, up the scree slope seen here above the
house roof and up to the white mark on the fell "The Bishop" and then
basically straight up.

After parking up we
headed through the wood to find this, "The Clerk" a pinnacle of rock
painted white set amongst the trees and bracken.

The route ahead, a testing steep ascent
over loose scree to The Bishop. The path now goes to the left of the rock
unlike in AW's route description.

This pinnacle of rock has
been painted white and can be seen from some distance.

Higher up the scree gully
looking down the route we had just come.

The solitary Rowan tree
which AW described- including the initials.

Skiddaw across
Bassenthwaite Lake.

A profusion of Bilberries
ripe for picking.

AW's route actually
passes just above these two trees. Now the way is getting overgrown and
has fallen out of regular use. The way now goes directly up over Slape
Crag involving a little "hands on" work.

Soon we are on Barf
summit and this fine view of the lake and Binsey.

Top dog! and the summit cairn?? Lord's Seat
behind where we are heading.

The north-western fells
form Lord's Seat and just enough breeze to lift Zeta's ears. From here we
descended alongside the Beckstones plantation fence.

Barf and the Skiddaw
hills.

Once in the forest we
followed the new forestry road before heading down towards the falls of
Beckstones Gill.

The route descends by a
woodland path and now over this small rockface which in A.W's description
is bypassed.

Now much lower down we
are under the scree slope we ascended earlier.

And back to the car
parked near the old Swan Hotel now a private residence.
Not a long route today
but still enough to tidy up some of the "targets" that I needed.
