23rd August 2009 Near Crummockwater.

The forecast for the day was appalling- and they were right! As I was in the area anyway I used the day to tick of a couple of references from the lower slopes of the fells. These are just a couple of photographs to illustrate these simple routes.

Gasgale Gill near Whiteside. Fortunately I knew where precisely I was heading to and so it was a short walk in this rain.

As you can see from the rain on the camera, it was an awful day but still I managed to get a more exact photo of a reference I obtained last year which can be seen in this photo. I dont usually return to these locations but in the revised edition of the Pictorial Guides this reference could not be located so I just had to confirm to myself that I had taken the right shot- which I had.

A murky Grasmoor taken as I returned to the car.

From Lanthwaite Green I drove along towards Rannerdale and set of on another short walk up Rannerdale Beck. here looking over to Rannerdale Knotts.

Rannerdale Beck and Eel Crag.

Having obtained my target I then headed back down the beck and contoured round towards Cinderdale Beck. It was a good day to get the references of waterfalls as they were in full flow.

Somewhere along here there were three references that I needed, hard going in thick wet bracken.

And not all look the same as they did in Wainwright's day.

There were plenty of potential waterfalls it was just a case of finding the right ones. Mission was accomplished though and thoroughly soaked I returned to the car.

The fellsides were wash with rainwater as here in Honister Pass. Still, thankfully not a wasted day.
