25th November 2008 . Dove Crag round.

A cold spell of recent weather meant that a light dusting of snow was lying on the higher fells. I took the opportunity and set off on a route to take in a couple of fells in the Eastern region of the lake District.

First light over Ullswater as I head south.

As I set off walking from near Brotherswater the first rays of sun were touching Red Screes and Middle Dodd.

Dove Crag at the far end of Dovedale.

Further up I crossed the beck to drop down for a view of Dove Falls.

The main section of Dove Falls.

Regaining height I took the unusual route up and over The Stangs which gave me this view of Dove Crag. I then dropped back down to pick up the path seen here bottom right.

Now heading up the main path under the crag.

Looking back to Dovedale over the old mine hut.

Crossing the snow-line and looking back to the far eastern fells.

Reaching the ridge. Fairfield on the left and Hart Crag on the right.

Blue skies over snow topped fells, Crinkle Crags through to Great End.

and Great Gable to Pillar over the Great Rigg ridge.

Looking into Easy Gully.

Dove Crag summit.

Bright winter sun over Windermere as I head to Bakestones.

The cairn on Bakestones with Ill Bell behind the shadowed slopes of Red Screes.

Bakestones and my next fell, Little Hart Crag.

Come on!......Zoe en-route to Little Hart Crag.

Little Hart Crag summit. Dove Crag on the left and Helvellyn in the distance.

Striking a pose. On the ridge to High Hartsop Dodd.

High Hartsop Dodd. What it lacks in a cairn it makes up for in a view.

A descent off the Dodd would be quite simple but I headed back up towards Scandale pass below the summit of Little Hart Crag.

Looking back to the crag from the ascent of Red Screes.

The distinct path that heads up to Red Screes summit.

Frozen tarn on Red Screes.

Helvellyn ridge forms the far skyline over the trig point.

Aerial view of The Kirkstone Inn.

From the summit I headed off to the north ridge which leads to Middle Dodd.

An easy ridge leads to Middle Dodd with fine views to Place Fell.

To the east the Ill Bell ridge.

Winter skies over Middle Dodd summit.

A steep descent off the north end of Middle Dodd.

and as I head back to the car the last of the sun lights Angle Tarn Pikes. A good winters day out on the Eastern Fells.
