Dawn was just breaking as we headed down into Mallerstang.
Our Hill for the walk, Wild Boar Fell in the dawn ligh.
Parking at the quarry near Aisgill the early sun was lighting the fell. It wasn't to last long though as there was a good cloud cover.
We headed up under the viaduct at Aisgill.
Early light over Mallerstang and the Settle to Carlisle line.
The escarpment to which we were heading.
Angerholme Pots.
It was a beautiful day despite the incoming cloud.
Snow-covered Limestone pavement and The Nab.
As we reached the ridge the view to the west was of the rounded hills of the Howgill range.
Sheepfold on the ridge.
Ascending towards The Nab.
There were occasional snow showers and cloud that gave the sun a milky look.
Wild Boar Fell escarpment.
The Summit.
The team on the summit.
The line of cairns, about eleven in total.
Christmas lunch, a bit cold to hang about though.
The sun almost breaks through.
The route to Swarth fell follows the fenceline.
The col is usually a bit of a bog-trot but today all was frozen.
Swarth Fell summit in low cloud and snow. For the next while it was a bit of map navigation over to Swarth Fell Pike and then the drop down to Mallerstang.
As we broke out of the cloud Mallerstang had patches of sun and snow.
A simple descent off the fell brought us out at the quarry where we parked the car. Impressive frozen waterfalls were worth a look.
As we headed home we passed Pendragon Castle at the end of a good Christmas Day out on the hill. home | On Location | Dales and Howgills
