Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

26th August 2008- A short walk on Mirk Fell.

Today, as most days recently, I have been out and about gathering references for some Grouse paintings. I took a short trip over to the top end of Arkengarthdale and planned to walk up William Gill, over Mirk Fell and back down to the start via the Tan Hill road.

After plenty of recent rain, William Gill was flowing fast.

Without gaining much height we were heading into the mist and drizzle. (Zeta takes off at speed!)

Normally this ford has just a trickle. Today called for stepping stones.

This may not look like much of a photo but it's the sort of atmosphere I was looking for to use in future paintings.

At the head of the Gill is the remains of William Gill Colliery.

There are some dangers here. This shaft is over 100' deep ( someone had left string which can just be seen in the cage so I used this to measure.)

The area is scattered with coal.

Pathless terrain, deep peat haggs and mist, all good for testing navigational skills.

A Mirky day on Mirk Fell. (Zoe flushes a Grouse)

Now back on the Jaggers road which would lead to Tan Hill Inn about 1km further on.

Mirk Fell Gill, the shaley soil has been eroded to form very deep steep sided gullies.

Nearing home I was able to get this shot in the fading light. A young cock Black Grouse.
