29th October 2011 Around Fusedale

This half day route was done purely to obtain one single reference for Loadpot Hill and I was taking a bit of a gamble as the weather of low cloud looked as if it would be hit or miss in getting the required photo.

Sunrise

A fine sunrise over Knipe Scar. Not a bad view first thing from the B&B.

Martindale church

Parking at the new church above Howtown we then headed up the slopes of Steel Knotts.

Ullswater

Ullswater and Howtown from the ascent.

Hallin Fell

The route comes up the side of this small rock gully.

hallin Fell

Hallin fell behind.

Steel Knotts

Steel Knotts summit requires a bit of hand work.

Steel Knotts

Bailey has to get a look in in the summit pose.

Fusedale

Onwards to Fusedale Head.

Steel Knotts

Crossing the wall and a view back to Steel Knotts.

Fusedale

A combination of light drizzle and low cloud as we cross the moor.

Fusedale

Ruins in Fusedale.

Steel Knotts

From the ruins back to Steel Knotts.

Fusedale ruin

Fusedale

The hint of a rainbow as we ascend the path to Wether Hill.

goo

"Goo" on the fell. There is some debate as to what this actually is and actually features in newspaper articles. Click here.

wether Hill

Ascending the "groove".

Wether Hill

Nearly at the ridge.

Wether Hill

Once on the ridge, the route of the old Roman Road, we head left towards the summit.

Wether Hill

Wether Hill summit with our next fell, Loadpot Hill beyond.

Lowther House

The ruins of Lowther House.

Becks

About the only spot on this route for a bit of shelter. Even though the drizzle had stopped there was a brisk wind.

Loadpot Hill

Loadpot Hill summit, a trig column with its own moat today.

Loadpot Hill

Low cloud on Loadpot Hill.

Fusedale

A drop of a few hundred feet brought us down below the cloud to Dodd Gill. There is little, if any, hint of a path on this route.

Ullswater

This was near the point where I needed to be for my reference and I was lucky with the weather.

Dodd Gill Fusedale

Looking back up to our route of descent.

Slate bridge fusedale

Slate bridge in Fusedale which we crossed to head towards Howtown.

mellguards

Mellguards from the path which takes us round the bottom of Steel Knotts north ridge.

martindale

Following the good path back towards Martindale

Lanty's tarn

Lanty's Tarn, close to the church and the start point.

That was an interesting route which takes in three fells but without much difficulty. In low cloud care is needed in navigating down to Dodd Gill.
