Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

3rd August 2010. Howgills, Black Force

Visitors to the website may recall a walk we did here in the Howgills on the 23rd May on that occassion we were thwarted on our planned route by restrictions on Black Force due to breeding birds. Today we re-visited this route as we need to complete a report for this years Wainwright Society's "Best of the Rest" challenge.

Carlingill Bridge

Setting off from Carlingill Bridge at 7pm on a dry but overcast evening.

Carlingill Beck

Carlingill Beck, just a little more water in it this time. We followed the left bank of the beck.

Carlingill Beck erosion

Landslip by the side of the beck, possibly from last Autumns heavy rain.

Carlingill Beck

Further up the valley and Black Force comes into view, the scar in the distance.

Small Gill

Passing the cut of Small Gill.

Black Force

The path now narrows and gains height on the fellside.

Black Force

Black Force itself. The path we were about to take can be seen on the left of the picture.

Black Force

It's a dramatic cut in the land, especially for here in the Howgills.

Carlingill Beck

As we gain height the view to our left is of Carlingill Beck and the narrow gorge that leads from the Spout. (see our route for 23rd May)

Black Force

It's a steep pull up on the ridge.

Black Force

Some delightful falls in the gorge.

Carlingill

Below us is Carlingill and the distant Lune Valley (and the M6)

Black Force

The ridge narrows to a fine arete. Uldale Head behind.

Black Force

Folds in the rocks.

Black Force

From the head of Black Force..

Fell Head

In front of us Fell Head is shrouded in cloud. We are not going that way today but heading up to the right towards Linghaw.

Carlingill

Contouring round Blake Rigg with The Spout of Carlingill bottom left..

Carlingill

The rounded slopes of the Howgills.

Linghaw Col

A neat path skirts round to the col under Linghaw.

Linghaw

Fell hounds.

Lune valley

Descending Linghaw. There was rain approaching from the west but we were lucky to reach the car in the dry.

Black Swan Ravenstonedale

On the way home there was time to call into the Black Swan in Ravenstonedale for a drink.

Hardly brilliant photos form this walk but it was a very enjoyable two hours on the hill.
