Andy Beck - On Location

Route details and photographs of areas where Andy has been walking, sketching and gathering references for future work.

This route was part of Andy's fascinating and unique project "The Wainwrights in Colour". Click here

7th September 2009 Mosedale and Kirk Fell.

The long drive around to Wasdale meant that I was trying to get as much in as possible today. Unfortunately the weather wasn't on my side as the low cloud on the fell tops hung around until early afternoon. Luckily I had a number of references to find which didn't require extensive views. I parked up at Wasdale Head.

The Pack horse bridge with Kirk Fell.

Ritson's Force. Recent heavy rain has swollen the flow. To see the sketch of the force click here.

I was now heading into Mosedale on the west side of the beck. Wind Gap is just out of cloud but my route is up to the left into Black Comb.

Over my left shoulder was Yewbarrow and the scree slope down from Dore Head.

The split boulder which stands about 14' high. The sketch of this can be seen here.

Sun and shadow in Mosedale.

Mosedale Beck, somewhere along its length was a waterfall which I was looking for, I climbed upwards.

after several falls I found my target. From here I was to contour round to Gatherstone Head.

Now with Kirk Fell ahead I contoured this pathless scree covered slope- slow going on loose slippery rocks.

Sun in Wasdale.

Looking back from Black Sail Pass with Looking Stead up to the right. The waterfall where I had just come from can just about be seen high up in the valley.

Dropping down towards Ennerdale I was able to get the shot I needed of Sail Beck before re-ascending and taking the traverse route under the crags of Kirk Fell. The route can just about be seen here crossing the lower part of the beck.

Haystacks and the Black Sail Hostel from the traverse.

Due to the low cloud I ventured from Beck Head down Mose's Trod to Stone Cove where I found another reference. The view down into Ennerdale with Pillar on the left and away to the right, Starling Dodd where I will be later this week.

I returned to Beck Head and took the route up Kirk Fell via Rib End. by this time the cloud was starting to lift.

Across to Great Gable from the slopes of Kirk Fell.

Pillar from the north summit of the fell.

Zooming in on a sunlit Napes Needle.

The rocky summit of Kirk Fell.

A short walk south from the summit give you this view of Wastwater.

"Boundless energy" (too quick for me to focus on!)

By following the fence line north a route of descent off the fell towards Black Sail Pass can be taken. It has some steep and rocky sections which need care.

Once at the pass I headed up to Looking Stead. Here the descent route off Kirk Fell can be seen following the ridge of crags.

Re-tracing my steps to Black Sail Pass I took the well made path down towards Wasdale Head.

A last look back into Mosedale as I approach Wasdale Head. The weather had curtailed my plans for the day but it was still a good day out onto a new fell.
