8th July 2009 Greenburn and Bowfell

As you may have gathered from the above title today I was to do two separate walks, the first was intro the Greenburn valley at the head of Little Langdale for the sole purpose of obtaining one reference. As it was a simple "there and back" route I have included it with the main walk of the day. This second walk was up Mickleden and up and over Bowfell, returning via The Band.

After parking up above Fell Foot Farm on the Wrynose Pass road I crossed the river and contoured round the end of Wet Side Edge. Here looking back towards the Langdale Pikes.

A patch of light in Little Langdale.

The breached dam at Greenburn Tarn.

Great Carrs and Greenburn Beck. Having obtained the reference I needed I then returned to the car and drove round to The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Great Langdale.

The well walked track in Mickleden.

The Langdale Pikes tower above us on the right.

The guide stone. In stead of taking either route I headed up the steep slope of Green Tongue to pick up the old pony track.

Mickleden opens out below as I gain height.

On the pull up the hill sits this lone boulder, if you sit yourself here you will be at the same point as AW  when he obtained his reference for Rossett Pike 5, probably while he was having a smoke!

Bowfell Buttress dominates the skyline as I contour round the hill.

A fly-past from a couple of "Fat Alberts"

The Packwoman's Grave. A location I missed on my last visit, hence one of the reasons for my walking this route today. From here I could have opted to continue upwards on the new path but instead headed for Rossett Gill.

The days when this was the main walkers route over the pass have now gone. The new and improved path makes for a much easier ascent/descent, especially for those heading for Scafell Pike.

From the head of the pass its a short and easy detour to take in the summit of Rossett Pike and a grand view of the Pikes and Mickleden.

Even a good view into Langstrath.

An aerial view of The Packwoman's Grave.

The Mickleden Cairn on Rossett Pike. From here I returned to the head of the pass and continued on my route towards Ore Gap.

This route, here looking back at Rossett Pike, has to cope with a huge volume of walkers every year on the pilgrimage to Scafell Pike. Consequently the path has recently undergone major repair.

Allen Crags and a far distant Grasmoor from above Ore Gap.

The Scafell Pikes from the boulder strewn approach to Bowfell summit.

Zooming in on Mickledore and Scafell Pike.

Crinkle Crags from Bowfell summit. The cairn is just out of shot on the right but I was more interested in the large boulder lying flat in the foreground. (See the Bowfell page of my Wainwright's in Colour section for an explanation)

Pike O'Blisco from near the summit.

The Great Slab.

More footpath repairs on the path down to the Three Tarns.

Work in progress.

It was now a simple descent route via The Band, not much evening light about but still managed to get the references from here which I needed.

The summer pastures of Mickleden. Through Stool End farm and then back to the ODG and a little refreshment before heading home. Not such a long route today but very productive.
