First light over
Wastwater.

The ascent of Yewbarrow.

Great Door. This gap is easily missed as
the regular route now heads up to the un-named notch up to the left.

Looking down on Bell Rib
summit. The great Door is the furthest scar across the ridge.

Light over the Scafells.

Yewbarrow summit and
Seatallan.

Kirk Fell seen from the
cairn above Stirrup Crag.

Red Pike across Dore
Head.

From the steep and
scrambly descent of Stirrup Crag there is a good view down over the
pinnacle. (Stirrup Crag can be avoided by an easier grass route.)

A couple of Tasmanians
who I met on Stirrup Crag. They were just about to finish their
"Wainwright " round on Friday.

Stirrup Crag from Dore
Head.

Harter Fell from the rise
up to Red Pike. In the bottom of the picture can be seen the silhouette of
Yewbarrow and just on the summit are the two Tasmanians claiming one of
their last fells.

Zeta strikes a regal pose
in the Red Pike Chair, or should that be "throne"?

The cairn at point 2629'.
from here I had to descent towards Low Tarn for another odd reference
photograph.

Low Tarn. Now back up to
the summit.

Red Pike's precariously
placed summit cairn. |

And my route ahead to
Pillar, still with a touch of cloud.

Sun in Black Comb. Only
two days ago I was down in there looking for waterfalls.

A special place. This
spot near Black Crag was where just over 3 years ago I came up with the
original idea of the Wainrights in Colour project. here I am comparing the
book to the actual scene.

Steeple's east face from
near Black Crag.

Heading up to Pillar and
the look back to Red Pike and Yewbarrow.

Pillar summit.

Distinctive Great Gable.

A sunlit Haystacks with
Innominate Tarn.

After a very low pass
over Black Sail, a "Herc" turns over a now crowded Wasdale Car Park.

The view over Black Sail
Pass as I descended towards Looking Stead. |

Turning off the main path
I was to follow the High Level Route to Pillar Rock.

This narrow and "airy"
path give some fine view down into Ennerdale.

Robinson cairn and the
first view of Pillar Rock.

On a rock nearby is fixed
this plaque.

The afternoon sun just
touches the highest crags. My route is now up to Shamrock Traverse, the
sloping rake at the top left of the photograph.

A steep zig-zag path
leads up to the start of the rake.

The beginning of the
Shamrock Traverse. This narrow path has a couple of patches of rock which
on this day has a covering of wet greasy moss. Care was needed.

Looking back down on the
traverse.

Pillar High Man. The
route continues up to the left on a steep scree slope.

High Man and Pisgah from
above.

Once again back on Pillar
summit. From here I headed towards Scoat Fell.

The unusual summit cairn
of Scoat, placed on the wall top.

Steeple seen across Mirk
Cove.

The short ridge route
towards Steeple from Scoat Fell.

The evening sun on
Steeple summit.

From the summit I was to
return to Scoat Fell along the ridge and back up the edge seen here.

After a short detour to
Mirkin Cove I took the path down towards Scoat Tarn.

The split boulder by the
tarn.

Middle Fell and Seatallan
in the late light.

The best of the light had
gone as I began my descent route alongside Nethermost Beck. This time I
had run out of light to get my last 3 references for the day, they will
have to wait for another return visit. it had been a great day out though. |
