20th. January 2009. Snow on High Ground. Hardberry Hill

This shortish walk was to take me up to the trig point on Hardberry Hill, north of Middleton in Teesdale. Also to take a look at Coldberry mines. Snow was lying at above 330m.

First light through winter clouds.

Coldberry Mines. A substantial area of old lead mining activity including this large building.

Hudeshope, the valley behind. The light was quite poor meaning most of the photographs have a heavy blue tint.

Footprints in the snow as we gain height.

The area is covered with old excavations, care must be taken.

Nature reclaims the landscape.

Winter sky.

Snow sculpture.

Hardberry Hill summit 529m.

Cloudberry Gutter, an old lead mining "Hush". Looking towards Upper Teesdale, High Force is amongst the distant trees.

Behind this lip is the reservoir of water used in the hushing. Water was released to expose veins of lead close to the ground surface. From this point water could be directed either east or west down the hill.

I headed East on the north edge of the gutter. We were enveloped in a snow shower.

Approaching the mine buildings once again.

The collection of buildings provide welcome shelter for sheep.

The light has improved slightly to give a better view of the mine.

I drove around Hudes Hope road to get this overall photograph of Coldberry Mine. The notch on the skyline is Coldberry Gutter. The snow and light highlights the extensive workings of the mine.

As I headed down the dale I left the snowline.
