Globe Flower just coming into bloom. The track is the
line of the Pennine Way.

Caught in the sun.

Cronkley Farm. The Pennine Way has recently been
diverted round the farm instead of through the yard.

Large clusters of Mountain Pansies.

Mountain Pansy, yellow form. Not often found here more
frequent in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Pennine Way crosses Bracken Rigg.

The River Tees from Bracken Rigg.

A passing rain shower with a following rainbow.

Heading up the old drove road of Green Trod.

White Force, its been a while since I have seen this
much water in it.

Looking back towards Teesdale from the Green Trod..

Bright sunshine but very windy as you can see from
Bailey's ears!

There are several enclosures in place on the heights of
the fell. These are to protect the rare plants hereabouts.

This time last year (21/5/10)
these enclosures were filled with Spring Gentians and Birds Eye Primrose
today I could only find one specimen of the latter.

A few clumps of Spring Sandwort.

Sheep in the enclosures.

The unlocked gate to the enclosure was a sign, once the
Gentians have bloomed for the year the sheep are brought in to keep the
turf to a neat crop. It seems that thisyear the peak of the flowering
season was at least three weeks early.

A small form of Lady's Mantle. (Unsure of which
sub-species)

The Sugar Limestone which provides the unique soil
conditions for some of these rare plants.

White Well Spring.

The High Pennines from White Well Spring.

Crossing Cronkley Fell.

I did spot this one fine example of Birds Eye Primrose
growing on the bank of the river.

Cuckoo Flower.

Widdy Bank Farm across the river.

Even Sphagnum Moss glows golden when in flower.

Sunshine and shadow down the dale.

Light on the land.

Knott Hill farm and Wheysike House.

Nice patches of afternoon light.

Back at hanging Shaw.
A bit disappointing to have missed the Spring flowers but still a fine
walk out over Cronkley Fell.
