20th February 2008- A frozen Sleightholme Beck.

After a period of cold weather an ice "spectacle" on Sleightholme Beck made news in local papers and even TV. I took a walk to see for myself.

Sleightholme consists of a small number of remote farms which walkers pass through on the Pennine Way if they are doing the "Bowes Loop". This is the first view of it if you have just walked from Tan Hill.

Know as "The Trough", the beck has gouged a ravine in the limestone. To see this view in July after heavy rain click here.

This is the feature of ice which was caused by slow seepage of water freezing from the fields above.

Difficult to give a sense of scale here but the longest icicles were about 6' tall. Not quite the 20' given in the press.

Other falls in the area were frozen but not to the same effect.
