28th. March 2010.- Deepdale.

The advantage of this route is that it starts and finishes in Barnard Castle town making it handy for refreshments at the end of this pleasant woodland route. Once again its a local Teesdale walk found in the small pocket guide book Teesdale by Paul Hannon. When I did this walk the footbridge was out of commisssion but it has since reopened making it easier to cross the river instead of using the County bridge as I had too.

Have you seen the new Greeting Card Range?. Click here.

Barnard Castle

The walk would normally cross the River Tees via the footbridge but today I had to use the County Bridge after passsing under the walls of the castle.

Upstream part of the bank has been badly eroded.

Deepdale off Road

Before long we passed through an area of private land that is the course used by Deepdale Off-Road a 4x4 driving route..

Deepdale

At this point the beck has to be crossed, there used to be some decent stepping stones but these have shifted. There was only one course of action and that was to wade through barefoot as the streem was shin deep in parts.

Just past the farm I took a look at the old railway viaduct, this is the view that passengers would have had of the town.

A look back along the track as we near the town.

Silver bridge

This is the footbridge that we would normally use, it has been closed for maintenance for some time but since this photograph was taken it has re-opened.

County bridge

I returned to the start by crossing the County Bridge, in the past Yorkshire was the left bank and Durham on the right.

And another pleasant way to spend a couple of hours exploring the aspects of Teesdale.
