Balderhead Reservoir

The strata of rocks exposed.

Normally a decent waterfall here but today it was almost dry.

Balderhead.

From this point it was trackless walking across the moor
to Shacklesborough.

Shacklesborough like its twin, Goldsborough is a cap of
Gritstone which sits on the moor as a neat mound.

From the top there is a good view of Upper Teesdale.

In the other direction there is a great view across the
bleak moor down to Yorkshire. There is only one building in this view and
that's a pub! The Tan Hill Inn some miles distant is just a speck on the
horizon directly above the pointed stone. (you will have to take my word
for it.)

Summit cairn on Shacklesborough.

With a trig point for company.

From the top it was a descent of using the track along
Galloway Ridge.

The track provided easier going across the frozen
ground.

Sheepfold at Caper Gill.

Goldsborough ahead but we take the track to the left.

Soon we were approaching the dam

To our right were the reservoirs of Blackton and Hury.
On the spur of land on the left is Birk Hat, the former home of Hannah
Hauxwell.

Blackton Youth Hostel, well known to walkers on the
Pennine Way.

Balderhead Reservoir with a good amount of ice cover.

Lime Kiln.

Soon back on the dale road for a short walk back to the
start.

The bonus today was seeing a good number of Black
Grouse, some of the males were displaying but I only managed to get
distant shots as they are very timid.

Shacklesborough across the reservoir.

Hidden in the long grass were these Grey Partridge,
another lucky shot and a nice finish to a good walk in Baldersdale.
