8th July 2008- High Force.
As dramatic as it is, to see High Force at its best you really have to see it after heavy rain or snow thaw. This normally happens in the winter months. After a couple of days of unusually wet weather I took myself of to see if the force would be worth a look.

High Force Hotel where most people park when visiting the waterfall. |
|
As part of the Raby Estate a visit to the falls from this side of the river is not free. However the path to High Force is immaculate and even accessible to disabled people. It's wise to heed all the warning signs as accidents do happen here.

After a short walk High Force appears, on days like this you will hear it first. Normally the water cascades only over the main gorge, today it is also to the left and right.

A about 70' it may not be the highest in the country but it must be one of the most awesome.

After this the Tees takes on a more peaceful journey to the North Sea, Low Force about two miles downstream from here forms more falls but less dramatic.

Nearby is this "money tree", coins firmly wedged into the cracks of an old Pine perhaps for good luck.

|
Every gap is filled with coins. From High Force I retraced my steps to the Hotel and then took a footpath to cross the Tees further downstream via a footbridge. I was going to view High Force from the south side.

A fine specimen of a Northern Marsh orchid in it's prime.

The sun appeared as I looked down onto High Force. This lofty viewpoint is just off the Pennine Way.

Lichen covered rocks of an old wall lead up to a fine stand of Juniper trees.

This the Pennine Way looking back towards Middleton-in-Teesdale. I crossed over the bridge which leads back to the High Force Hotel. |
