22nd January 2008- Teesdale in winter & High Force

Snow fell yesterday and a hard night frost followed. These opportunities don't arise very often so an early start was called for. Instead of a long walk, I decided to tour the dale first to get some references for winter scenes. I was lucky. I achieved more than I hoped for. This selection is just a small example of my days outing.

As a point of interest, all the photos are shown in the same order as they were taken. Apart from a small amount of cropping, none have been digitally enhanced. Unlike other pages here I have added the photos at a larger scale by request.

Dawn on the Eggleston road.

Morning sky on the Stanhope road.

Winter sheep.

and turning round on the same spot.

Black grouse (cock)

and the female, know as a Greyhen.

The early morning sun on the snow. Kirkcarrion in the distance.

A hard life. This was on the road towards Alston which was still blocked by snow drifts.

And the last house in Teesdale at Harwood.

I left the car at Bowlees and decided to walk to High Force. Low Force here.

The sky now looked more like a moonscape.

High Force in winter from the south side of the Tees. (The Pennine Way route.) The Force was closed off from the North side near the Hotel due to dangerous trees. I saw no-one else on my walk and I left the only footprints.
