The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch. All images are the copyright of the artist. To obtain these references has required 2 days of walking: 24/6/08 26/5/10 (click on the dates to see the photos) Arthur's Pike 1747'
From the Howtown Road. Illustrated by AW the foreground is filled with a low hedgerow of shrubs and foxgloves. Now the same vegetation is about 8 feet high so to get this fell view I had to stand on the inside of the field so that Arthur's Pike could be fully observed.
Ullswater from the Howtown path. 26/5/10 AW's title (above) seems to be slightly out as this aspect is actually from the Helton path, the Howtown path being nearer the wood, lower down the fell.
Arthur's Pike summit. 24/6/08 An enlarged cairn now sits on the summit.
Ullswater from the beacon. 24/6/08 A fine view to the southern reach of Ullswater and the high hills beyond.
Swarthbeck Gill 26/5/10 The gill is now much more overgrown than in AW's day and the rocks in the gill bed have changed position in places. Fell Complete.
