Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour. The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch. All images are the copyright of the artist. Bannerdale Crags 2230'approx.
From the ridge leading to Bowscale Fell. 28/8/08 A delightful walk along this fine escarpment.
Upper level, Bannerdale Mine. 28/8/08 The entrance to the mine is quite difficult to access due to the undergrowth. I have simplified the scene here to give a better comparison to AW's drawing.
Lower level, Bannerdale Mine. 28/8/08 Mosses, bracken and heather are all closing in on this level entrance and a curtain of water hinders exploration.
Bannerdale Crags from Mungrisdale. 28/8/08 An unchanged view in 50 years.
The east ridge. 28/8/08 The well quarried east ridge, cloud almost covers the actual summit of the fell.
The summit from the east ridge. 29/8/08 Diverting off the main ridge path gives this view to the summit just as AW saw it.
The summit. 29/8/08 The cairn remains much the same, a small pile of slate with pleasing views. Bowscale Fell seen here on the right is an easy stroll from this fell.
The ruined hut. 28/8/08 Someone has gone to the trouble of walling up the doorway, behind which the tree growing out of the chimney-breast which AW described has grown even larger.
A natural cave. 29/8/08 Wainwright suggests this cave would provide "shelter for six persons", I reckon they would have to be very good friends. Fell complete.
