Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 3 days of walking: 2/9/08, 21/4/09, 5/7/09  (click on the dates to see the photos)

Beda Fell                                                     1664'

Beda Fell from Hallin Fell

From Hallin Fell. 21/4/09

A late evening visit to Hallin Fell allowed me to capture the fell in the last of the sun glow which enhanced the hue of the bracken covered slopes.

Beda Fell bridge in Boardale

Bridge in Boardale.

Obviously in the intervening years this bridge has been re-built with now only one central support. I did have to travel the length of the dale to confirm I had actually found the right bridge but the background detail backs up the evidence.

Beda Fell cairn

The Summit 21/4/09

A view of Ullswater framed by Hallin Fell and Steel Knotts as seen from the small summit cairn.

Beda Fell 5

The ridge south. 2/9/08

This cairn is situated above Broad Crags and is by-passed by the path on the left if heading to Angletarn Pikes (the mound over the right hand slope.)

Beda Fell from Martindale

Beda Fell from Martindale Old Church. 21/4/09

This is one of the very few sketches in the entire project where I was able to depict the same time of day, late evening, as AW did in his sketch. The scene is almost identical except that I have included the derelict farm on the far side of the valley which he omitted.

more sketches to follow shortly.
