Gallery Home >Wainwrights in Colour >Book 1 (Eastern) > Birkhouse Moor Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour. The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch. All images are the copyright of the artist. To obtain these references has required 1 day of walking: 6/2/09, (click on the dates to see the photos) Birkhouse Moor 2350'approx
From above Lanty's Tarn. 6/2/09 Due to the tree plantation that now surrounds and obscures the tarn I had to obtain this view from higher up the slopes of Keldas than is shown in the Pictorial Guide.
Ullswater from Keldas. 6/2/09 The two Scots Pine trees in A.W's drawing have long since gone leaving this open view of the lake.
The highest point. 6/2/09 Its not a huge cairn on the summit even at the best of times but today it could only just be seen under the snow drift next to the wall.
The cairn at 2318'. 6/2/09 Not the highest point but a great view down to Ullswater can be had from this point.
Keldas. 6/2/09 The cairn is not as neat as it was in Wainwright's time but the pile of stones still marks the top of this knoll. Fell complete.
